Begin your home manicure in a comfortable and well-lit location. Make sure you have a flat and covered surface to work on.
Off with the Old
For convenience, use one of the newer nail polish removers that takes off polish while conditioning your nails and cuticles at the same time and is designed to minimize spills like Cutex® Essential Care® One Touch Pump Nail Polish Remover or Cutex® Essential Care® One Step Remover Pads. Thoroughly remove old polish on and under the surface of the nail.
Soak 'em Smooth
Soak your hands in warm water mixed with a moisturizing soap. Dry hands with a soft and warmed towel.
Clip, Cut and File
Clip or cut nails to a length that satisfies you. Nails are best filed in one direction starting from the edges to the top. An oval-shaped nail that reflects the nail's natural curve is the easiest to file and care for.
Cuticle Care
Apply cream to the cuticles or a non-oily moisturizer with vitamins and natural ingredients. Gently push back the cuticles with an orange stick and clip off excess skin between the nails with a pair of small, clean clippers.
Massage and Moisturize
Massage your hands with a silky smooth moisturizing lotion filled with vitamins and nutrients. Remove excess cream and oils from your nails with a swipe of nail polish remover.
Polish to Perfection
Whatever your mood, choose a nail color to fit it. First apply a base coat to your nails to make them strong and to prevent chipping, cracking or peeling and allow the base coat to dry. Apply polish conservatively by beginning at the center of the nail with one stroke and adding two more strokes to the sides. Clean any leftover marks with a cotton swab dipped in polish remover and let dry for a minute or so before adding a second coat for deeper color. Finish the manicure with a clear top coat.
Tricks of the Trade
Allow adequate drying time but if you want to speed up the process, use a liquid or spray-on enamel polish for quick drying, or dip your hands in cold water for a few seconds. If you're polishing in the evening, apply a few hours before bedtime. A healthy body makes for the strongest nails so drink lots of water and take a multi-vitamin once a day.
